Khaju Bridge Isfahan

Khaju Bridge

Khaju Bridge is an urban bridge with multiple arches and two levels in the city of Isfahan, Iran, that crosses the Zayandeh Rud River, joining the two sides of the river.

Khaju bridge was built in the Modern Age. It is one of the best examples of Persian architecture at the time of the Safavid dynasty cultural influence, one of the most important dynasties of Iran. Khaju bridge was built by the Persian king of the Safavid dynasty Shah Abbas II around 1650. Safavids made one of the greatest Persian empires after the Muslim conquest of Persia. The main features of Persian architecture that are clearly present in Khaju bridge are the realization of the works in stone, marble, brick and wood, using arches and vaults. Functionally it serves as a bridge and spillway and also fulfilling a primary function as a building and finally a place of public meetings. It originally served as a tea house. The bridge was restored in 1873.

Made of brick and stone, Khaju bridge is 126.5 meters long and 11.7 m wide and has 24 arches. The stone pieces are more than 2 m long and the distance between each channel and the roof base is 21 m. The bridge regulates the flow of water in the river as it has floodgates under the arches over the river. When the floodgates are closed, the water level can rise up to 2.0 m and facilitates the watering of the gardens along the river. Khaju bridge has two levels, on the upper level of the bridge, the central part was used by horses and cars and the side roads covered with vaults by pedestrians. In the center of the bridge, on both sides, there are two octagonal pavilions. These pavilions in the middle of Khaju bridge, with fantastic view of the river and the city, were used by the royal family.

Nowadays Khaju bridge is a public place for meetings where families, friends and even groups of people gather together beside or under the bridge, have a snack, drink tea and even sing songs together. Therefore visiting Khaju bridge at night is a must for you if you travel to Isfahan.
