Meybod Attractions

Meybod

Meybod is located in the desert, 52km northwest of Yazd, following the main road toward Isfahan. Much of the city is made up of adobe buildings, with a kind of reddish clay, which causes the earthy tone of Meybod. A few years ago the city tried to be included in the Unesco list, but it has not yet succeeded. Today it does not seem so, but it was a very important city during the time of the Sassanid Empire, as evidenced by the ruins of One of the oldest castles in Iran, Narin Castle, built by the Sassanids over 2,000 years ago. Unfortunately, the lack of zeal in the present makes the castle live in abandonment.

Meybod is famous for caravans and for their places where former merchant centers provided supplies in the middle of trade routes, many of which were transformed into restaurants or other private properties. In these places it is common even today to see the artisans making the famous Persian rugs.

The Main Tourist Attractions in Meybod

Meybod Narin Castle
Built on top of Mount Galeen , it is one of the oldest buildings preserved in Iran, although its upper floors were widely modified with the arrival of Islam. From the outside you could see brick walls and a very restored tower. When you climb up the stairs, you reach a terrace that offers incredible views of Meybod, with the Old Town in the foreground, full of adobe houses with undulating roofs, badgirs, domes, minarets, arches, with perfect light for taking photos.

Meybod Ice Storage (Yakhchal)
literally "ice pit". It is a huge conical adobe structure, connected to a Qanat, where ice was produced and stored to consume during the summer, although sometimes ice was also provided from nearby mountains. The truth is that Iranians achieved great improvements to make such intelligent architectures.

Meybod Caravanserai
Meybod caravanserai is excessively restored. Inside the caravanserai there are several craft shops where you can see the process of making different handicrafts and maybe buy one. In the past, caravanserais were used as guest houses with many rooms, where travelers could rest for the night and restore food and water supply to continue to next city.

Meybod Traditional Post Office
Despite being 300 years old, and being the only one of the 99 that formerly operated in Iran, the appearance of the Meybod Post Office is modern.
