The Pink Mosque, Shiraz

The Pink Mosque (Nasir-ol-molk Mosque)
The Pink Mosque is unique due to the use of tiles in pink and reddish colors, and the colored windows that create an amazing ambient light effect on the walls and floor of the main prayer room, especially during sunrise hours.

The mosques around the world are numerous and varied. Each one offers its own design, and yet, to distinguish itself from the others, a mosque needs to be unique and possess exceptional characteristics. The Pink Mosque, located in the city of Shiraz, in Iran is a good example.

The Pink Mosque is known by many popular names such as the " Pink Mosque ", the " Colorful Mosque ", the "Rainbow Mosque" or the "Kaleidoscope Mosque". On the outside the Pink Mosque looks like a conventional mosque, but on the inside it is a space where light and worship are intertwined. With the dawn and the first rays of sunshine, the Pink Mosquebecomes alive and the colors begin to dance. The colors are reflected on the floor, the walls, the arches and the towering towers. In fact if we visit Nasir-ol-molk Mosque, the color bathed lights will be reflected in us and we will be one more piece of this special kaleidoscope.
The original name of the Mosque in Persian is Masjed-e Nasir ol Molk. Although from the outside it can be confused with an ordinary Iranian mosque, inside it hides an impressive piece of architecture and design.
The construction of this magnificent building was began in 1876 under the order of one of the lords of the Qajar dynasty, Mirza Hasan Ali Nasir al-Mulk. This architectural work was not completed until 1888, that is, after 12 years of work.

Muhammad Hasan-e Memar and Muhammad Reza Kashi Paz-e Shirazi were the designers and architects who made this masterpiece possible, and for this they used stained glass on the facade and other traditional elements such as “panj kaseh-i” (five concaves), which create a kaleidoscope effect in The Pink Mosque. Once sunlight hits the stained glass windows, the entire building is flooded with a vibrant rainbow. It is popularly known as "Pink Mosque", because its tiles are beautifully decorated with a pink hue.

Today this magnificent mosque is still in use under the protection of the Nasir-ol-molk Foundation. This spectacular 19th-century infrastructure is a celebration of classic and modern times embedded in Islamic heritage. It has roots in Islamic art, which are appreciated in architecture, tile manufacturing, geometry and patterns, among other arts.

The production of colored glass existed in western Asia around the 8th century. The art of creating these colors can be seen in the different countries of the Middle East and thus, you can see such colorful windows in different countries.
